Bhopal, April 12: Indian school team registered a tremendous victory over Malaysia to claim the title at the 5th Asian School Hockey Championship here at the Aishbagh Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. Notably, India’s Alishan Mohammad and Pratap Lakra’s aggressive game and goals led India to win against Malaysia by 5-1.
Alishan continued to play aggressively in the Championship as he gave India an early lead with a stunning field goal in the 12th minute. India's next two goals came in the 20th and 23rd minute when Lakra successfully converted a penalty corner and a penalty stroke respectively.
Malaysian team later played a bit aggressively and scored their first goal which unfortunately was the last goal for them. Akhimullah Anuar Esook scored a single goal for Malaysia. Later, Malaysian players tried hard to comeback but failed in front of Indian attack and defence too.
Meanwhile, Alishan Mohammad scored his second goal of the match in the 34th minute and earned his team a comfortable 4-1 lead at half-time. In the second half, Maninder Singh scored in the 38th minute but after that, the Indian defenders did well to keep Malaysia from scoring another goal to end the match with an emphatic 5-1 victory. Malaysia had to settle for a second place finish.
In the match for a third and fourth place, Singapore beat China 3-1 in a nail-biting shootout after the two teams ended the regulation time in a 1-1 stalemate. Earlier, Indian team defeated China in the semi-finals whereas defending champion Malaysia defeated Singapore by 12-0 to enter into finals.
