Bangalore, April 15: Earlier, Mumbai Indians defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets in their 2017 Indian Premier League match with 7 balls remaining. On the other side, Gujarat Lions defeated Pune Super Giants by 4 wickets in Rajkot.
RCB scored 142/5 after a solid 62 by skipper Virat Kohli on his IPL return. Later, RCB could not have asked for a better start to their defence of 142/5 total as Samuel Badree picked up the first hat-trick of IPL 2017. The West Indian, playing his first game of this season, dismissed Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McClenaghan and Rohit Sharma to complete the feat.
But Kieron Pollard had other ideas. He hit a 47-ball 70 and with Krunal Pandya put his team on the verge of victory which was sealed by a six from Hardik Pandya. Batting first Bangalore was well placed after captain Virat Kohli’s fifty but lost their way in the death overs to post only 142/5. Notably, this is the third defeat out of four matches of RCB in the current IPL tournament.
In the other match, Gujarat Lions never looked like they would face any difficulty as they chased down their target of 172 set by Rising Pune Supergiant. Openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith themselves looked like they would take the match away from RPS as they smashed an opening partnership of 94 runs. Their wickets fell but Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch took them over the line. Gujarat Lions have hence claimed the first victory of their season.
