Bhubaneswar, Apr 16: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Executive Sunday congratulated the Narendra Modi government for granting statutory status to the Backward Class Commission.
Addressing a press conference here to brief the scribes about the resolutions passed on Sunday, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javdekar said that the commission was constituted 25 years ago but could not work effectively for the want of Constitutional status.
He blamed the Congress and other secular parties for not granting statutory status to the commission all these years. They, especially the Congress Party, used and exploited them as vote banks but did not do anything for them, he alleged.
Javdekar said that over 52 percent of the people of India belonging to OBC categories are deprived of basic educational facilities. So the government formed the Backward Class Commission some 25 years ago based on the recommendations of the Mandal commission and Kalelkar panel. But they did not accord the much needed statutory status and powers to the commission.
Due to this the commission was helpless in resolving the issues related to the OBC groups for over 30 years. Congress government and their secular partners only played a vote bank politics and exploited the Muslims, OBCs and Dalits etc. for their political benefits, he added.
The Modi government has taken a decision to give a statutory status to this commission and the cabinet approved this and the Lok Sabha passed this amendment bill with great majority. This made the hitherto non-functional and ineffective Backward Class Commission a powerful and effective body, he added.
However, Javdekar said that the Congress and their friends in Opposition in the Rajya Sabha stalled this amendment bill in the name of some corrections and reforms, thus preemting the effective step the BJP government has taken.
The resolution of the BJP national executive has condemned the attitude of the Congress and other opposition parties. Javdekar said that all the OBC MPs cutting across the party lines, had come to meet the Prime Minister and thanked him for granting statutory status to the bill but the same MPs stalled this amendment bill in the Rajya Sabha, he added.
The BJP in this resolution criticised their attitude and blamed them for the backwardness of the people. They did not give justice to these sections but exploited them as their vote banks, Javdekar alleged.
Javdekar further said that the BJP National Executive passed a resolution on the present political scenario that analysed the present popular tilt towards the BJP countrywide. It was mainly due to the confidence people have developed about the functioning style of the Modi government.
IN 2014 people voted us to power for their hope and now that hope is converted into trust and confidence, he said adding that this is for the first time the people are voting for development and progress and not on the basis of caste, creed or religion.
