New York, April 17: Controversial Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has won the Time Magazine's Most Influential Person poll after consistently leading the TIME 100 reader's poll. Notably, in an online survey, TIME Magazine asked its readers to choose who should be included in its annual list of the world's most influential people.
Duterte, who launched the bloody war against illegal drugs since claiming the presidency in July, got ahead of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Pope Francis, richest man in the world Bill Gates and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the survey. The four all got 3 percent of "yes" votes. US Sen. Bernie Sanders and Russian President Vladimir Putin won the reader poll in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

Notably, TIME listed 114 personalities it considers worthy to be on "TIME 100." After each vote readers are automatically shown the percentage of votes for "yes" or "no." However, the official TIME 100 selected by its editors, the list of 100 most influential people will be announced on April 20.

In the contest, Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer and President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner. Trump garnered 2 percent votes.

Indian Prime Minister Modi had been named among the probable contenders for the annual list of the most influential people in the world. However, Modi had not garnered any "yes" votes at the close of the voting, with the polls showing he had got "zero percent" votes along with other contenders such as Microsoft's India-born CEO Satya Nadella, Israeli Prime

Modi had been named among the magazine's probable contenders in last year's Time 100 list also. He was named by Time editors among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2015 and Obama had written a profile for him for the magazine.

Last year, Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan, tennis star Sania Mirza, actress Priyanka Chopra, Google's India-born CEO Sundar Pichai and founders of Indian e-commerce major Flipkart Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal were among Time's list of the 100 most influential people.
