Jakarta, April 16: Gayatri Pullela, daughter of National Badminton coach Pullela Gopichand's daughter on Sunday won both the singles and doubles crown at the Pembangunan Jaya Raya Junior Grand Prix in Jakarta.
Notably, Gayatri defeated her doubles partner Samiya Farooqui by 21-11 18-21 21-16 to win the girls U-15 singles title. Both the players played aggressively but Gayatri was better in all the three sets during match for which she got the reward as a title.
Later, she teemed up with Samiya to clinch the U-15 doubles title with a straight game 21-17, 21-15 win over Indonesian pair of Kelly Larissa and Shelandry Vyola. In doubles, Indian partners kept pressure on their opponents and grabbed all the chances and converted into the points.
Interestingly, both Gayatri and Samiya train together at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad. After winning U-15 doubles event, Samiya said, "It was a great experience for me considering I was playing my own partner in the singles final. Tournaments like these are a great learning for us, and we look forward to many such competitions.” “I would also like to thank our coach Gopi sir who is helping us get better and better,” she added.
Earlier, Gayatri defeated Indonesia's Puspitanaya Effendi Nadelita 21-12, 21-11 to reach the final of the women's U-15 singles event, while Samiya beat compatriot Kavipriya Selvam 15-21, 21-13, 21-16 to meet her in the summit clash. Gayatri and Samiya made the doubles final after beating Dea Riska Putri Hapsari and Anyza Velda Syafira 21-16, 21-12.
In the women's U-15 doubles semi-finals, Meghana Reddy Mareddy and Kavipriya lost to Larissa and Vyola 21-16, 21-18 on Saturday. Vikas Yadav lost to Mawardi Putra Damas 21-17, 18-21, 21-17 in the men's U-15 semi-finals.
