New Delhi, April 18 : Ever since Mahendra Singh Dhoni was ousted from the captainship of the IPL franchise, Rising Pune Supergiants for the 10th edition, his skills as a batsman has been the subject of every Tom, Dick, and Harry’s criticism. However, what led to the controversial tug-of-war in the RPS team and among Dhoni supporters was the tweet of Harsh Goenka, brother of the team owner.
After their first match against Mumbai Indians in which Dhoni remained not out at 12 while skipper Steven Smith snatched the play with a whopping 54-ball 84 runs, Goenka had taken to twitter, saying “Smith proves who’s the king of the jungle, overshadows Dhoni completely.” Supporters and fans rallied behind Dhoni following a series of condescending tweets by Goenka concerning Dhoni.
What made things worse for the former captain of Indian cricket team is his consistent poor performance, having scored only 61 runs in 5 innings. Former captain Sourav Ganguly had also questioned Dhoni’s skill, claiming his doubts about Dhoni’s T20 skills.
However, despite criticisms, Dhoni played undeterred and performed well in their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, providing momentum to the team at crucial timing by hitting a massive six that landed directly on the roof of the stadium, and taking out the opponent team’s star batsman, AB deVilliers with a lightning speed stumping that turned the tide of the match.
Former Australian skipper and ace spin bowler, Shane Warne has come out in the support of MS Dhoni, taking to twitter to say that, “Dhoni need not prove anything to anyone,” while also praising his captaincy.
With most of the IPL season yet to go, Dhoni’s fans and supporters wish for him to break the jinx and emerge as the great finisher and inspiring player that he is.
