Monaco, April 21: Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas on Thursday swiftly entered into the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Notably, Indo-Uruguayan defeated the fifth seeded pair of Rajeev Ram and Raven Klaasen by 6-7, 6-4, 10-6.
Ram and Klaasen of the USA and South Africa respectively took a lead in the first set playing aggressively. But Indo-Uruguayan pair charged up in a second and third round, fought back valiantly too the crucial break in the game and easily won the match.
This game was full of excitement as both the teams were playing comprehensively and showcased their performance which was at its best. In the quarter-finals, the Indo-Uruguayan duo will face top seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles, Novak Djokovic’s road to recovery continued with the victory against Pablo Carreno Busta as he secured his passage through to the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Djokovic, playing only his second clay match of the year following elbow surgery, dropped the middle set and was tied at 4-4 in the decider before edging the final two games to secure a nervy 6-2 4-6 6-4 win over the Spaniard.
The fifth seed Marin Cilic defeated Tomas Berdych in straight sets, while number 11 seed Lucas Pouille secured his passage through to the quarter-finals after his French compatriot Adrian Mannarino retired in the first set.
But there was a surprise exit for Stan Wawrinka after the number three seed joined Murray in departing the tournament at the last-16 stage. Wawrinka, the three-time major winner, was beaten in straight sets by Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas 6-4 6-4.
