Lucknow, April 21: The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh has been fined four lakh rupees by the electricity department for exceeding permissible limits of power usage. A surprise raid by a team of electricity officials revealed that Mulayam had unpaid electricity bills worth Rs 4 lakh.
About the surprise raid, an electricity official Ashutosh Varma said: "We are conducting a drive to stop the power theft, check overloading and recover dues." Varma also clarified that they did not carry out these visits earlier because they never had 40kW metres.
We found that the SP leader, who had a permissible limit of 5 kW, crossed the limit by 8 times. He has to pay the amount by April end. The Samajwadi Party leader has been given time till the end of the month to clear all dues, Varma added.
Meanwhile, Mulayam's house situated in Etawah, is one of the largest in the city with around dozen rooms, temperature controlled swimming pool and multiple elevators.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already decided that district headquarters will get 24-hour power supply. They are working hard to meet the Centre's target of making the state energy efficient by 2018 and help in ensuring power in all UP villages before 2019.
