Govt notifies authorities for rejuvenation and protection of river Ganga

New Delhi, April 7: The government has notified authorities Order, 2016 for Rejuvenation, Protection and Management of River Ganga. The order is passed under the provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986 where the government has constituted National Council for Rejuvenation, Protection, and Management of River Ganga which is even referred as National Ganga Council said Minister of State for Water Resources, river development and Ganga Rejuvenation Vijay Goel.The catchment area of the river basin and its watershed has been fixed and made available in the River Basin Atlas, 2012 and is also available in public domain in Ganga Bhuvan portal. 

Paragraph 42 of the notification says that some matters relating to river Ganga and any area adjoining river Ganga or its tributaries needs a prior approval from the National Mission for Clean Ganga in need to implement the decision of National Ganga Council. 

  • Engineered diversion and storage of water in River Ganga without affecting the flow of water downstream of the River Ganga
  • Construction of bridges and associated roads and embankments over the River Ganga or at its River Bank or its floodplain area
  • Construction of Ghats or extension of any existing Ghat
  • Construction of jetties
  • Construction of permanent hydraulic structures for storage or diversion or control of waters or channelisation of River Ganga or its tributaries
  • Deforestation of hill slopes and notified forest and other eco-sensitive areas
