Patna, May 18: Out of 24 crore Indian households, 10 Crore households are still deprived of LPG as cooking fuel. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched to safeguard the health of women & children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel. Under this PMUY scheme over 28 lakh households have been benefited in Bihar.
In next two years, the scheme aims to cover 60 lakh families. Families from poor background still now rely on rely on firewood, coal, dung – cakes etc. as the primary source of cooking. The smoke emerged out of these fuels causes several pollutions in households leading to respiratory diseases. To motivate these families to use LPG fuel, oil marketing companies have already worked on strategies.
Already, 47% households of the state have come under the coverage of LPG connection. But to cover more families, various activities have been taken. Camps are being organized in several parts of the state to make them aware about benefits from LPG connection. Oil marketing companies are working hard to motivate and bring forward poor families for new LPG connections.
As AIR reported, a beneficiary of the scheme, Shela Devi native of village Chataria under Bahadurpur block of Darbahnga district has described how LPG has brought a change in their lifestyle. Earlier they used to cook food with the help of logs. With LPG connections they have been provided LPG stove also and now they cook using it.
The scheme helps to change the lifestyle of a socio-economical backward class.
