Berlin, May 19: The German Chancellor has already warned UK and Theresa May about the divorce bill that the country has to sign with the EU before Brexit. In an uncompromising tone, Merkel said that UK will have to “pay a price” if EU immigration is restricted.
“If the British government ends the free movement of people, that will have its price in relations with Britain. But you cannot expect to enjoy all the benefits and then say there will be an upper limit of 100,000 or 200,000 EU citizens, no more, or we’ll only accept researchers, but nobody else. This will not work.” told Merkel in a meeting of trade union officials in Berlin.
Merkel has sternly announced that if British government ends the free movement of people then that will have its price in relations with Britain. She even said that the British car industry will run into losses as it receives its supplies from continental European countries.
She also warned against the UK against seeking economic advantages by opting out of the EU’s rules on workers’ rights or environmental protection. However, Merkel said that EU is prepared to do “everything” to maintain friendly relations but its upto Theresa May and how the negotiations work out.
