Health of Oceans declining soon; UN organizes Ocean Conference

Geneva, May 22: Only one-fourth of the Earth is land mass and the rest is only water mass, and a huge amount of water mass is there covered by the Oceans. Ocean is one of the largest natural resources of the world, which is needed to conserve for the future. United Nation Conference supporting the implementation of sustainable development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

This Conference will be convened at United Nation headquarters in New York, from 5th to 9th June of this year, coinciding with World Oceans Day. Fiji and Sweden have got the responsibility of co-hosting this conference.

Program of the conference:

This conference will try to identify the ways of supporting the implementation of sustainable development Goal 14 and it is looking forward to building a successful partnership with other co-hosting countries. This conference will involve all relevant stakeholders, bringing together Governments, the United Nations system, other intergovernmental organizations, international financial institutions, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions the scientific community, the private sector, philanthropic organizations and as well as the actions taken towards the implementation of  Sustainable development Goal 14. According to the resolutions 67/290 of 9 July 2013, 70/1 of 25 September 2015 and 70/299 of 29 July 2016, on the implementation of Goal 14, a high-level political forum will provide their inputs in this sustainable development. The plans to include these resolutions will be discussed at this conference, which will strengthen the opportunities in future.

On 15th-16th February 2017, the President of the General Assembly convened a two-day preparatory meeting, which was chaired by H.E. Mr. Alvaro Mendonya Moura, Permanent Representative of Portugal to the UN and H.E. Mr. Burhan Gafoor, Permanent Representative of Singapore to the UN. Now this conference will comprise plenary meetings, partnership dialogues and a special event commemorating World Oceans Day.

Mr. Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations is the Secretary-General of the Conference. And Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares will serve as a special advisor for legal matters in the conference on the Ocean.

This conference aims to be a game changer in this scenario. This will make slower the decline of the health of our Oceans. This conference has an aim to save the planet, people by maintaining the ocean in good health, for the future. In this conference, an earnest engagement of all is needed.
