“Russia without Putin” chanting goes viral on Russia day; opposition leader sentenced 1 month custody

Moscow, June 13: The Russian president Vladimir Putin instead of being one of the most powerful world leaders faced most criticism from both inside and outside of the country. Putin is leading Russia for 17 years.  A part of Russian youth thinks it is the time to put an end to corrupted era. According to them, Putin has engulfed all the power. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is also blamed for having a vast amount of personal wealth through illegal means. Opposition leader Alexei Navalny lead a protest against Putin which thousands of protesters in 160 cities came to streets on Russia Day. The protestors are chanting “Russia without Putin”.

The organizer of the protest was Alexei Navalny who is now running for presidential election. He has been sentenced to 30 days' administrative arrest. 825 people had been detained at the protest in the capital. Instead of knowing the risk, the young crowd raised the voice chanting  "Putin, thief!" and "Russia will be free".  

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is alleged of having a vast fortune. A video published on youtube shows that PM has a duck house on one of his properties. This video reached 23 million viewers. Protestors are mainly using social media to reach public. “About 4,500 people took part in an unauthorized protest on Tverskaya Street in the center of the Russian capital, Moscow”, Moscow police said to local media.

"I want changes. I want to live in a modern democratic state and I want our taxes to be converted into roads, schools and hospitals, not into yachts, palaces, and vineyards." Navalny wrote in a statement.

The protest was started on Russia Day. Hence it coincided with festivals, concerts, and military enactments.
