Nairobi, June 14: Kenya is going through a political turmoil but wants badly an economic reformation. National carrier Kenya Airways made June 2018 target for National carrier Kenya Airways. They were seeking “economic authority”. The airways have moved one step closer to their target. The Department of Transportation (DOT) granted it the first set of licenses. DOT has granted them “exemption authority”.
The first set of license allows Kenya Airways to commence flight. But Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other applicable State agencies also need to give security clearance. Foreign Air Carrier Permit has also been granted by DOT. Still, it needs to secure clearance from US Security agencies, aviation, and border agencies.
“The authority sought by the applicant is encompassed by the US-Kenya Air Transport Agreement. We, therefore, find that grant of the requested exemption authority, for a two-year term, or until the requested permit authority becomes effective, whichever occurs earlier, is warranted.”, DOT has said.
American airline is the expected partner of the airways through code-sharing. It has targeted June 2018 for the inaugural landing in Nairobi. “When making the application to the US Department of Transportation (DoT), airlines have to submit an indicative date of launch. In our submission we went with mid next year because we have to match the approval date with market trends,” Mbuvi Ngunze, KQ’s outgoing chief executive said.
