Bengaluru, June 16: The Congress party in Karnataka suffered a major jolt on Thursday as its no trust motion against the legislative council chairman D H Shankaramurthy of the BJP was defeated on the floor of the house by just one vote.

According to the Times of India the JD (S) came to the rescue to the BJP with 13 of their MLCs supporting the BJP leading to 37 votes against the no trust motion moved by the ruling Congress party.

The defeat reflected the poor strategy of the Congress leadership, which dragged its feet on the JD(S) rider for support.

“Till late Wednesday night, when there was a common opinion to make senior JD(S) MLC Basavaraj Horratti the council chairman, Congress resisted it. But early on Thursday morning, they came to me with the offer of making Horratti chairperson. We decided to reject the offer as it would dent the party image,” state JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy said.

Opposition leader K S Eshwarappa of BJP said, “I hope this decision by Kumaraswamy and JD(S) translate into supporting BJP’s efforts to remove Congress from power in the 2018 assembly elections.”

Kumaraswamy, however, clarified that his party’s support to BJP was confined to the legislative council and should not be seen as an indication for the assembly polls next year. With JD(S) hedging its bets, evidently, the party, with its slender numbers, hopes to emerge a king-maker.

In the council, Congress and leader of the House G Parameshwara appeared to have lost the plot much before voting began. By the time Congress, in a late reaction, agreed to the JD(S) demand to make Horatti chairman, BJP had worked on the numbers to defeat the motion.
