Jakarta, June 16: India’s leading badminton players HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth on Friday stormed into semifinals of men's singles at the Indonesia Open. Prannoy defeated Chinese Chen Long by 21-18, 16-21, 21-19 while Srikanth registered a comprehensive win over world No 19 Tzu Wei Wang of Chinese Taipei by 21-15, 21-14.
However, the first game saw some furious rallies, with Prannoy matching Long with some excellent shots and returns. He took the lead at 10-7, then went from 14-9 to 18-14 but from 15-18, the Chinese player took the game to 18-20 before Prannoy won it.
In a second set Chinese Chen Long did a strong comeback and defeated Prannoy by 16-21, in the third set which was a decider, Prannoy who did a comeback from major injury played aggressively and turned the match into his favour easily. Meanwhile, it was a double delight for Indian badminton fans as K Srikanth also made it to the last four by overcoming Tzu Wei Wang in straight games.
H S Prannoy earlier defeated World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in straight games to storm into the men's singles quarterfinals. K Srikanth also dug deep into his reservoir to notch up a stunning 21-15 20-22 21-16 victory over fourth seed Denmark's Jan O Jorgensen to join Prannoy in the quarterfinals in the Indonesia Open. But India suffered a huge setback in women's event with both Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu crashing out of the Indonesia Super Series Premier.
