Srinagar, June 17: At least six police personnel including a SHO were martyred and two civilians were injured after a group of heavily armed militants belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) ambushed a police patrol party in Achabal town of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. Notably, after the ambush LeT immediately claimed the responsibility for the attack.

The ambush was laid by around 10-15 heavily armed militants and opened fire from all the directions on the police patrolling party which was led by SHO Feroz Ahmad near Kulgad area of Achabal town of Anantnag district. All the six police personnel were martyred in the cowardly terrorist attack.

The SHO martyred has been identified as Feroze Ahmed Dar. The incident took place this evening when the team was on its way to the police station at Achabal after completing their duty in Anantnag. Army has been already called out to undertake a combing operation in the area.

However, it was one of the most barbaric attacks as the militants shot policemen with their assault rifles after overpowering them. The policemen who retaliated bravely, however, could not break the trap laid by the terrorists. The terrorists first overpowered them, then fatally shot them in their faces from close range and escaped with their weapons.

Director General of Police S P Vaid said, "It is an unfortunate incident to have lost six men including Sub-Inspector Feroz, a resident of Pulwama. Their contribution to the police service will be remembered." Meanwhile, J&K Police Officer Imtiyaz Hussain vowed to take the revenge of the cowardly attack.

Interestingly, the attack on the police team comes hours after three militants, including the commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Junaid Mattoo, were killed in a gunfight with the security forces in south Kashmir's Kulgam district.
