Udupi, June 19: On Sunday the President Pranab Mukherjee to provide better health infrastructure in rural areas, laid the foundation stone for A Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Super Specialty Hospital. This hospital will provide hassle free services for people to encourage quality health.
President Mukherjee while addressing the ceremony said that while advances in modern medicine and investment in health infrastructure have made many diseases such as cholera, small pox, plague, tuberculosis etc. curable and eradicated others, yet there remains a huge gap in our country in terms of access to medicine and health care. This brings us to the larger and more serious question of the skewed nature of health care in India – both in terms of infrastructure and personnel. Against the international norm of one doctor per thousand population, we have one doctor for 1700 people in our country. The ratio thus stands at 0.7:1000. The situation is all the more alarming in the vast hinterland of rural India.
President Pranab Mukherjee also stressed upon the need to encourage doctors to practise in such places.Prez Mukherjee was accompanied by Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George. He visited the Udupi Sri Krishna Math and had Darshan of Lord Krishna besides meeting Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math to seek his blessings. He then there laid the foundation stone for the A Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Super Speciality Hospital being constructed by businessman BR Shetty.
The President in his address also raised concern over the recent attacks on doctors. He later visited Kollur Sri Mookambika Temple and had darshan of Goddess Mookambika, before returning to New Delhi.
