Jakarta, June 17: India’s sensational badminton player Kidambi Srikanth on Sunday bagged the Indonesia Open Super Series men's singles trophy. Srikanth registered a commanding win over Japanese qualifier Kazumasa Sakai in straight games by 21-11, 21-19. In the match that lasted for only 37 minutes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Pranab Mukherjee, Sports Minister Vijay Goel, Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and many others from Bollywood too congratulated and extended their wishes via Twitter to Kidambi who bagged Indonesia Open trophy. President Mukherjee in a tweet congratulated Srikanth on winning the Premier title. Meanwhile, PM Modi said, India is extremely delighted on his victory.
Notably, the win helped Srikanth to avenge his compatriot HS Prannoy, who lost to the Japanese in yesterday's semi-final in three grueling games. Srikanth continuing his good form started the title clash in style, winning 21-11 in just 13 minutes. But the Japanese came back strongly to pose a fight-back, and was leading 13-11, then 17-15 as the match threatened to go all three games. But from 19-19, the more experienced Indian hold his nerve to close out the match with a tight 21-19 win.
Srikanth is the first Indian men's single player to win the tournament whereas Saina Nehwal was the first Indian women's single player to win the Indonesia Open Super Series title. With this win, Srikanth bagged his third Super Series title after he had notched up victories at the 2014 China Open and the 2015 India Open.
Earlier, in the semis, Srikanth defeated Taiwanese Tzu Wei Wang in straight games 17-21, 15-21. Before that he outclassed Danish giant Jan O Jorgensen in a three-game thriller, 21-15, 20-22, 21-16, and that was after playing a three-game thriller against 11th ranked Wong Ki Vincent of Hong Kong, which he won 21-15, 17-21, 21-16.
