New Delhi, June 28: Former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar, flanked by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other senior opposition leaders, filed her nomination for the July 17 Presidential election.
Opposition's Prez candidate, Meira Kumar is likely to start her campaign from June 30 from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi tweeted his support for Kumar moments before she filed her nomination.
The announcement of Meira Kumar's candidature against Ram Nath Kovind has made the election an interesting political battle. A five-time MP, Meira Kumar is a former IFS Officer and daughter of Congress veteran Babu Jagjivan Ram.
Earlier, Meira Kumar has termed the allegations made against her by EAM Sushma Swaraj as totally false. Swaraj on Sunday had posted a 6-min video of her 2013 LS speech in which the former Speaker was seen repeatedly interrupting the then leader of the opposition. However, Kumar said that she would give her best in the July 17 Presidential polls.
Meanwhile, NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind is far ahead in the number game as compared to his opponent Meira Kumar who is fielded by the combined opposition parties.
Ram Nath Kovind is sure to pocket 62 percent of votes in the presidential election to ensure his victory to the highest civilian post of the country. As per vote projections after some non-NDA parties extended their support to the BJP nominee Kovind has an assured 6,82,677 votes in his kitty. Meira Kumar, on the other hand, has 3,76,261 committed votes, which is 34% and one-third of the total collegium vote.
The President is elected by an electoral college comprising elected members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and state legislative assemblies. The President polls will be held on July 17 as President Pranab Mukherjee will demit the office on July 24.
