New Delhi, June 29: Along with Presidential election, Vice-Presidential election will be held soon. Today, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced the date of Vice Presidential poll as 5th August. The candidates can begin their nomination process from July 4. The nomination process will continue till July 18. EC as per its consultation with center, it has appointed Shamsher Sharif as the returning officer for the mentioned poll.
Current Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari will serve his duty till 10th August. He served the nation from 2007 and was again re-elected in 2012. According to rule, within 60 days of the expiry of the term of the office of the outgoing vice president, the election needs to be held.233 members of Rajyasabha, 543 members of Loksabha will participate in the election. On the day of election only, the result will be counted.
According to Indian Constitution, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both the houses of Parliament. The nominated members of Rajya Sabha as well of Lok Sabha are also eligible to be included in the Electoral College. Political parties cannot issue a whip to the members of Parliament.
Till now, BJP and Oppositions both have not announced any name for the aspiring position.
