New Delhi, June 7: The towering academic institutions University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) are on their way to become a thing of the past soon.
The NDA Government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contemplating to replace these two giant institutions with a new education regulator to improve the status of higher education in India.
The government intends to bring in one single education regulator christened as HEERA i.e. Higher Education Empowerment Regulation Agency. This new institution will be introduced with the aim of eliminating the overlaps in the jurisdiction and to remove the irrelevant regulatory provisions, a PTI report said.
The report also quoted sources as saying that both NITI Ayog andHRD ministry officials are working on the plan. It was felt that multiple regulatory bodies led to excessive and restrictive regulation and contributed to lack of institutional autonomy.
The HRD Ministry is working with the Niti Aayog towards the implementation of this new proposed regulatory body. They are working to bring the technical as well as the non-technical institutions under the same umbrella.
According to a PTI report, both HRD ministry and Niti Aayog are actively cooperating in the preparation of a detailed blueprint of the proposed regulator and its legislation.
