Washington, July 11: The United States President Donald Trump on Monday hailed victory over the Islamic State terror group in Mosul and congratulated Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Iraqis and Iraqi security forces too.

Notably, President Trump said in a statement that the victory signals Islamic State's days in Iraq and Syria are numbered. He further vowed that US will continue to seek the total destruction of IS. President Trump’s statement was echoed by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who also vowed to work with partners and the UN to stabilize liberated areas of Mosul and return displaced citizens.

Meanwhile, senior US commander in Iraq, Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend has warned that the war against the Islamic State is not over, despite a historic victory in Mosul. He said, there were still IS fighters in Iraq. The commander also said that the government should now reach out to Iraq's Sunnis to stop the terror group from renewing itself.

Interestingly, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Monday declared a victory over IS controlled Mosul city terming it as a triumph over brutality and terrorism after his forces ended the Islamic State group’s rule over the country’s second city. The US-led coalition backed the Mosul offensive and is supporting another assault on IS’s Syrian bastion Raqa. France President Emmanuel Macron was among the first world leaders to offer his congratulations. In a tweet, he said Mosul has been liberated from IS.

Importantly, the city had been the last major urban stronghold Isis held in Iraq, and defeat there pushes the group back towards its insurgent roots, leaving the militants with just a handful of towns and stretches of the sparsely populated desert under their control.
