Dispur, July 12: Assam government schools principals have warned to perform or perish. This reaction came after noticing the poor performances of a huge number of government schools in recent High School Leaving Examination (HSLC).

After reviewing the school-wise performance in the HSLC examination, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has warned the school's principals that some strict actions like giving voluntary retirement option and disciplinary action will be taken against the teachers or schools who will fail to perform.

Further adding the point, Minister noted that provincialised schools resorting to enrolment record manipulation would be de-provincialized if proved so.

Sarma stated, “During the review, we also noticed that several recently provincialised schools have a single-digit number of students. As per rules, the schools should have at least 30 students for provincializing”. He added, “Besides, many others contradictions have been found and regarding this, the inquiry would be conducted by tallying the school records with the SEBA records. We will de-provincialize such schools giving false data of students”.

The Principals of 93 government schools of Assam were also held responsible for their failure by having a pass percentage below 10.

To find a reason behind the failure, the Minister noted “We would send inspection teams to such schools to review the overall performance of the teachers. The team will also interact with the local people and further action would be taken up on the basis of reports produced by the team. If required, such schools would be merged with other schools and teachers would be transferred elsewhere”.
Sarma also informed that they are planning to make a Whatsapp Group of the poor performing schools where they have to daily drop daily updates related to the presence of teachers from the morning assembly session till the school hours gets the end.
