Canada Open: HS Prannoy advances to pre-quarter finals; Parupalli Kashyap bows out of tournament

Ottawa, July 13: India’s star badminton player HS Prannoy registered a commanding win over 9th ranked Kieran Merrilees and advanced to pre-quarter-finals in Canada Open on Thursday. Notably, Indian shuttler Prannoy defeated Scottish badminton player Kieran Merrilees by 21-17, 16-21, 21-15 in a match that lasted for 1 hour 8 minutes.

However, 16th seeded Parupalli Kashyap was bowed out of the tournament. Kashyap was defeated by Koki Watanabe of Japan by 10-21, 21-10, 15-21. Meanwhile, Karan Rajan Rajarajan showing his skills brightly registered a comprehensive win over Sam Parsons of England by 21-16, 21-14.

Another Indian shuttler, Abhishek Yelegar too entered the third round with a tough 21-10, 19-21, 21-17 victory over American shuttler Howard Shu. In women’s singles, South Asian Games champion Ruthvika Shivani Gadde stormed back from a first-game deficit to notch up a thrilling 6-21, 21-19, 21-13 victory over Korea’s Ga Eun Kim. National champion Rituparna Das, however, had to suffer loss as she went down fighting 21-9, 18-21, 16-21 to Japan’s Haruko Suzuki.

In mixed doubles, Tarun Kona and Meghana Jakkampudi stunned eighth seeds Nyl Yakura and Brittney Tam, 21-13, 22-20 and entered into the second round. While, Second-seeded pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy registered an easy win over the unheralded Peruvian duo of Daniel La Torre Regal and Danica Nishimura 21-10, 21-19.

On the other side, in men’s doubles, the defending champions Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy made a good start to their title defence by outclassing Kohei Gondo and Tatsuya Watanabe, 21-15, 21-19.
