To provide assistance for the flood affected districts, funds of Rs.500 Cr have been released

Guwahati, July 14: While North-East is reeling under the huge impacts of massive floods where people have left with no homes, still stranded. On Thursday Home Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju asserted that sufficient emergency funds have been released for flood affected states and Rs. 500 Crores has been given to the State Disaster Response Fund SDRF to provide assistance. 

Kiren Rijiju is leading a high-level team to review the flood situation in the North-East Region (NER), visited the flood affected districts of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji in Assam.The death toll has already reached 49.

Minister Rijiju was instructed to visit Assam by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju was accompanied by officials of the National Disaster Response Force, NITI Aayog and National Disaster Management Authority. 

The Minister toured Lakhimpur, the worst-affected district. Rijiju praised the Assam government for doing good work in carrying out relief and rescue operations. He assured the Centre will do everything possible to mitigate the suffering of people. 

Around 15 lakh people in 24 districts in the state have been hit by floods. Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh called Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and expressed concern over the damage caused by the devastating floods. 

Dr Singh also informed that Prime Minister Modi has entrusted him with extending all possible help from the Centre.  He said, "The Centre is very much with the people of Assam at this time of crisis, and assures all possible help to normalise the situation." 

Chief Minister Sonowal also directed the Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan, New Delhi to liaise with the DoNER Ministry and furnish an exhaustive account of the loss in terms of lives and properties incurred during the current flood. 

Kiren Rijiju also expressed concern over the damage caused by the crop and loss of human lives. He directed the PWD Roads Department to take immediate steps for temporary repair of the damaged roads. Later, reviewing the flood situation at Dhemaji district, Rijiju said that the Centre is very much concerned about the flood situation in the North East Region and he assured that the Central Government will provide all possible assistance to the State Governments to cope with the flood situation.
