Moscow, July 14: Russia and EU relation is worsening day by day due to Ukraine issue. Moscow decided to suspend its contribution to the Council of Europe’s budget. But still, amid this adverse situation, Moscow has agreed to have the constructive dialogue with the Council of Europe. Russian State Duma’s International Affairs Committee chairman Leonid Slutsky told local media on Thursday.
"Despite the situation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe [PACE], the Council of Europe remains to be an important area of our cooperation with international organizations, it is the broadest platform in Europe,” Slutsky said.
Though until the full restoration of rights of delegation to PACE Russia would continue the suspension of fund contribution, Russia will continue their work as a member of the Council of Europe.
"Only this week the State Duma made a decision to ratify two important conventions of the Council of Europe — the convention on security at sports events and the convention on financing terrorism," Slutsky said. Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni visited Moscow on Thursday.
In last month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov informed the Moscow's decision to suspend the country's 2017 contribution to the Council of Europe.
Russia was deprived of the right to vote at the Assembly’s sessions in 2014 and 2015. Even Russia lost the right to participate in the work of its three key bodies: the Bureau, the Presidential Committee and the Standing Committee over Crimea's secession to Russia.
