Torrential rain, floods like situation in Gujarat claims 15 precious lives, 6 others missing

Gandhinagar, July 17: At least 15 persons have lost their lives while six others are still missing in just 3 days due to torrential rain and flood like situation in several parts of Gujarat. Notably, Gujarat’s Jamnagar district, Saurashtra, Kutch has been affected most by heavy rains. Major rail networks and dozens of highways in the State have been interrupted by flood waters. Electricity to more than 120 villages has been cut in badly-hit areas.

A senior state government official said that 15 persons have lost their lives while six others are still missing. He also said that the rescue and search operation is already under way to find other survivors. “Food, drinking water and medicines are being distributed to the flood affected people in low lying areas,” the official added.

The forces including Indian army, air force and NDRF have rescued over 2,000 people from the worst-hit regions and relocated them to higher ground. Five NDRF teams have also been kept on standby for any emergency. Meanwhile, People have been asked to remain alert following overflowing dams and flooding rivers in Saurashtra area.

Monsoon rains have caused serious flooding in other states including Bihar, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Nearly half a million people in Assam have been affected, and more than two dozens killed due to heavy rains.

Earlier, in the year 2015 heavy rain and flood in Banaskantha, Patan and Kutch claimed lives of 72 people. Over 81609 cattle died in three districts, Banaskantha, Patan and Kutch. It included 42609 were large cattle like cows and buffaloes, while 38871 were small cattle, such as goats and sheep. The property worth 2000 crore was completely damaged or washed away as per government estimate. The crops in about 2 lakh hectares failed.
