New Delhi, July 17: The Congress party today backing presidential nominee Meira Kumar said that she's the right choice. The voting to elect 14th President of India is currently underway. There will be a straight fight for the top constitutional post between NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind and Opposition nominee Meira Kumar.
"The post held by the President is supreme. The person should be the right guardian of the Constitution and its values, and Meira Kumar is the right person," Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said.
Congress spokesperson said, "The election to the President of India is a fight for 'idea of India', our ideology and thought. Electors must cast their votes based in the national interest.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah who is also a legislator from Gujarat cast their vote. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Vice President Rahul Gandhi, former PM Manmohan Singh and BSP chief Mayawati were among those prominent leaders also cast their vote at Parliament house.
Paper ballots are being used in this election. Counting of the votes will be held on Thursday. The term of present incumbent Pranab Mukherjee comes to an end on the 24th of this month.
Moreover, BJP will announce its Vice Presidential candidate today. The party's Parliamentary Board meeting will be held in New Delhi to take a call in this regard. The Opposition has declared former West Bengal Governor, Gopal Krishna Gandhi as their candidate for the post.
