Shocking! India’s leading shot putter Manpreet Kaur fails doping test

Patiala, July 19: Several Indian athletes have failed a doping test in recent years. However, Indian contingent has got another setback after star shot putter and gold medalist at recently concluded Asian Athletics Championships Manpreet Kaur failed a doping test.

Notably, Shot putter Manpreet Kaur was tested positive for the stimulant Dimethylbutylamine in the test conducted by National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) during the Federation Cup in Patiala from June 1-4. Now, Manpreet will appear before a NADA disciplinary panel for a hearing to prove herself innocent and if she doesn’t then the national champion might lose the gold medal.

Interestingly, Manpreet is one of India’s top athlete who has qualified for next month’s World Athletics Championships in London will not be debarred from competing in the competition as the stimulant comes under the unspecified category of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).  

BACKGROUND:

Manpreet Kaur had won a gold medal in the Asian Grand Prix, held in China in April with a throw of 18.86 metres. Manpreet achieved number 1 ranking in the world due to her outstanding In Bhubaneswar by a brilliant throw of 18.28m which led her to win the gold.

Manpreet had also participated in the inter-state athletics meet that concluded on Tuesday in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. She dominated the women’s shot put, but her winning throw was 15.65m. The 27-year-old had also qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics but eventually finished 23rd with a best throw of 17.06m.
