Kohima, July 19: Nagaland Governor PB Acharya has appointed TR Zeliang as the new Chief Minister of the state. Zeliang will have to prove his majority on the floor of the House on or before July 22.

Earlier, Nagaland Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu failed to turn up for the floor test at a special session of the state assembly on Wednesday morning. The Assembly was adjourned sine die after his no show.

The motion to prove the majority of the chief minister could not be taken up as he was not present and the House was adjourned sine die, Speaker Imtiwapang said.

Liezietsu, who is facing a rebellion from MLAs of his party Nagaland Peoples Front (NPF) was to prove his majority on the floor of the House.

Liezietsu is facing a rebellion by 43 ruling NPF MLAs led by former CM TR Zeliang. Zeliang has been demanding a change of leadership in the present House of 59.

Zeliang was forced out of office in February following large-scale protests over holding of urban local bodies election with 33 per cent reservation for women. He had staked claim to form the government saying he had majority support in the House.

Four BJP legislators and Nagaland BJP president Visasolie Lhoungu submitted a letter to the Governor, supporting Zeliang.

Acharya asked the Speaker to convene the special session after the Kohima bench of the Gauhati High Court dismissed Liezietsu’s plea to stay the Governor’s directive of a trust vote by July 15.

Meanwhile, BJP is a pre-poll alliance partner of the NPF and a constituent of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) government in the state.
