California, July 20: India’s star shuttlers HS Prannoy, Sameer Verma and Parupalli Kashyap on Wednesday swiftly entered into the pre-quarter-finals round in the US Open Grand Prix which is being played in Anaheim, California.
In the Men's Singles, second seed Prannoy registered an easy win over Luka Wraber of Denmark in straight games by 21-12, 21-16 to open his campaign. His next opponent is the World No. 188 Joshua Magee of Ireland.
Sameer Verma, a fifth seed in the tournament defeated Vietnamese Hoang Nam Nguyen by 21-5, 21-10 to advance to the next round. Playing his first international match since April, he easily dismissed his Vietnamese opponent and will next play Croatian player Zvonimir Durkinjak.
shuttler Harsheel Dani also moved to the second round beating Mexican Arturo Hernandez. Harsheel defeated Arturo Hernandez by 21-13, 21-9 and will next face to the 15th seed Tien Minh Nguyen for a place in the pre-quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, the biggest victory came to P. Kashyap as he unsettled the top seed and defending champion Lee Hyun Il of South Korea 21-16, 10-21, 21-19 in the opening round. Prior to this match, Kashyap had a losing 2-3 head-to-head record over the 21st ranked Lee, who reached the semi-finals of the Canada Open just last week.
On the other side, in the women's singles event, after 2nd seeded Saina Nehwal pulled out of the tournament while Rituparna Das and Ruthvika Shivani reached in the pre quarter finals. However, Sri Krishna Priya, Sai Uttejita Rao Chukka and Reshma Karthik are the shuttlers who failed to move ahead in the tournament. In the doubles event, two of the three Indian pair in the Men's category, one of the two in Women's' and one of the two in the mixed event also reached the second round.
