New Delhi, July 23: The Sri Lankan navy has yesterday arrested 8 Tamil Nadu fishermen and seized their boat near Delft Island. The fishermen have been taken to Kankesanthurai Naval camp for further investigation.
Secretary of Sri Lankan Fisheries department W.A. Adhikari said, fishermen will be released after due procedure. With this, the total number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has gone up to 89. However, process is on to release most of the fishermen in coming days.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami recently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him to find a permanent solution to recurring mid-sea arrests. “Such continuing incidents of arrests of fishermen were a deliberate attempt by Sri Lanka to derail India’s efforts to find a permanent solution to the vexed issue,” the Chief Minister wrote in a letter to PM Modi.
Earlier, on July 16th, 4 Indian fishermen were arrested for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters. Sri Lankan personnel on a FAC of the Northern Naval Command of Colombo arrested the men.
