Kolkata, July 24: Now daily passengers of Kolkata don’t need to wait at a bus stand. For the first time in India, commuters are to get such real-time bus information in Google Maps. The West Bengal Transport Corporation and Google are working together to add real-time information about bus arrival times. This will make traveling easier for the passengers. To improve the transport in Kolkata, it is a big step.

Transit on Google Maps is a public transportation planning tool that combines the latest agency data with the power of Google Maps. It integrates transit stop, route, schedule, and fare information to make trip planning quick and easy for everyone. The current service is only available for key WBTC transit routes. Later it will be expanded to remaining routes. It will be a big relief for travelers if they can plan the leaving time according to bus timing.

"By sharing the real-time transit information of our buses with Google Maps, we are striving to deliver an enhanced level of service for our commuters. We are confident that the practical use of this technology will facilitate better trip planning resulting in greater convenience to commuters. We expect this to help increase the footfall in our buses and improve revenue realization,"  said IAS Managing Director, WBTC, Narayan Swaroop Nigam.

To access this facility, one simply has to Open Google Maps app on  Android or iOS device.  It can enter a destination and tap the ‘get directions’ icon. If it’s not already selected, tap the ‘transit’ icon (to view times, bus/train numbers, routes and more. Then the user can see the real-time arrival information in green.

There is also an alternate way to use the app. It is possible to access real-time bus information by searching for a particular bus stop, tapping its name and its listed bus numbers.
