Moscow, July 26: After Putin got re-elected Russia started concentrating on defense sector, especially international co-operation in the sector. Russia and Iraq had a history of close relation. Now Iraq wants closer military ties with Russia. During Russia visit of Iraq’s vice president Nouri al-Maliki, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the issue of supplying Russian T-90 tanks delivery to Iraq.
As local media reported, Russia and Iraq had signed a contract on delivering Russia’s T-90 tanks. According to Russia’s Uralvagonzavod company, the first shipment of 73 tanks was scheduled for this year. During Putin- Maliki talk, this issue was specially mentioned.
"Historically, Russia has close relations with Iraq. That is why we would like to see Russia’s visible presence in our country, both in terms of politics and defense," Maliki said following a meeting with Russian upper house of parliament speaker Valentina Matviyenko. "It would create [the] balance the region, its nations and countries need,” he added.
The visit was mainly aimed at discussing bilateral cooperation. The current situation in the region was also on focus.
