Prague, July 27: India’s leading boxing player and Asian silver-medalist Shiva Thapa and three other boxers including Gaurav Bidhuri, Kavinder Bisht, Amit Phangal on Wednesday advanced to the semi finals in their respective categories at the Grand Prix Usti Nad Labem boxing tournament which is being held in the Czech Republic. Notably, India will win four Bronze medals at least in the tournament.
Shiva Thapa defeated local favourite Erik Huleiv in a 60 kg weight category by a unanimous verdict to enter into the semi finals and assured to win at least bronze medals. While, three others Indians including Gaurav Bidhuri (56kg), Kavinder Bisht (52kg) and Amit Phangal (49kg) after defeating their opponents respectively were also assured of winning bronze medals.
On the other side, Sumit Sangwan in 91Kg and Manish Panwar in 81kg weight category stormed into quarter finals. While Sumit defeated Czech Republic’s Jiri Horky, Manish outclassed Belgium’s Yassine Aydir.
Interestingly, seven out of nine Indian boxers competing in this tournament have qualified for next month's World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. The World Championships-bound boxers are Amit, Kavinder, Gaurav, Shiva, Manoj, Sumit and Satish. However, Vikas Krishan has also qualified for the mega-event in the 75Kg category.
