Bhubaneswar, July 28: To mark the 2nd death anniversary of India’s most loved Former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Odisha formally named ‘Wheeler Island’ in honour of APJ Abdul Kalam. Also, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik paid homage to Dr. Abdul Kalam.
“With the view to paying a humble tribute to the former President of India, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the state government on obtaining no objection certificate from Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, do hereby rename the ‘Outer Wheeler’ as APJ Abdul Kalam Island,” read the notification.
The Outer Wheeler Island is located approximately 10 kilometres off the Odisha coast on the Bay of Bengal at Chandipur under Chandbali Tahasil of Bhadrak district.
Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had urged the Union Government over the declaration of the Wheeler Island to be named after Kalam to commemorate his contribution to the DRDA and India’s defence system.
