Proud! India bags four medals including one Gold in Deaflympics 2017

Samsun, July 28: Indian athletes continue to shine in the international sports arena. Notably, Indian athletes opened the account for India after winning four medals in Deaflympics 2017. On the ninth day of Deaflympics 2017 held in Samsun, Virender Singh won gold in wrestling and Diksha Dagar got silver in golf while two bronze medals were also added by Ajay Kumar (65kg) and Sumit Dahiya (97kg) winning matches in their respective categories.

Virender Singh was the first Indian athlete to clinch a gold medal in 74kg freestyle wrestling by beating Shakro Chakvetadze of Georgia 18-9 in the final. Earlier, Virender Singh defeated Batbaatar Shirendev of Mongolia by 6-4 and Maksim Slapic of Belarus by 6-2 in the semifinals and quarterfinals respectively.

On the other side, Ajay Kumar in 65 Kg category defeated Argishti Babayan of Armenia by a technical fall in the match for the bronze medal after he lost to China’s Dorjdagua Chinzorig in the quarterfinals. Sumit, after he got defeated by Ichan Citak of Turkey, won the match against Iran’s Mohammad Rasoul Ghamar technical fall, hence, bagging the bronze medal in 97 Kg category.

Meanwhile, major fall back came for Diksha Dagar as she missed the gold in the final round by losing to Kaylin Yost of the USA in golf. She was seeded directly into the semifinals. Till now India has secured one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the tournament. 

India’s former cricketer and dynamic opener Virender Sehwag congratulated Virender Singh and extended his wishes to him via twitter. He tweeted, “Congrats to Silent King,Virender Singh from Jhajhhar district for winning Gold in 74kg freestyle event in Deaflympics & making country proud.”
