Port Blair, July 3: In an accord to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachha Bharat Abhiyan’, Andaman is working for ‘Swachha Sagar Abhiyan’. The initiative is thus an action plan to keep marine environment clean and to create awareness among island population.
This is in continuation of weekly beach cleanup drive, which was initiated last week by Indian Coast Guard. The Indian Coast Guard conducted a beach clean-up activity at Collinpur Beach of Port Blair.
The various Coast Guard Ships and establishments in Andaman and Nicobar region will be participating in beach clean-up at different beaches and the activity will continue throughout the year.
The Indian Coast Guard further aims to gather the support of other agencies having a stake in the marine environment and the local civic agencies. The drive aims to clean-up as well as to preserve the natural environment of more than a dozen beaches in and around Port Blair.
The Collinpur Beach event was conducted on Saturday by the officers and men of Coast Guard Air Enclave Port Blair. The event also witnessed enthusiastic participation of civilians, besides the service personnel and their families. In a 400 meter stretch of Collinpur Beach, almost 200 kg of garbage was collected.
The clean-up drive was purposely planned during low tide as of that time the sea water recedes to the lowest level, thereby facilitating the availability of maximum area for cleaning. When motivated locals joined the service personnel in this noble cause, the anticipated results of creating awareness were confirmed.
Commander of Coast Guard Region, Inspector General KR Suresh Tatrakshak Medal stressed upon the importance of preserving the fragile marine ecosystem in these pristine islands. The maritime environs and the beaches are the very essence of the tourism industry and thus the economy of these islands.
In contributing its efforts for the protection of the maritime environment, the Coast Guard Andaman and Nicobar Region have always been in the forefront.
The North Bay beach area’s clean-up drive has now been scheduled for next Saturday and volunteers are invited to join hands with Indian Coast Guard towards making this a mass weekly activity. This will surely put Port Blair beaches among best beaches on world tourist map.
