Somali Foreign Minister Omar arrives in India for 1st official visit ; signs agreement for transfer of sentenced persons

New Delhi, August 1: In recent times India has noticeably developed its relationship with Africa. Earlier this year India also hosted the annual meeting of African Development Bank. Moving one step forward to the improved relation, the Foreign Minister of Somalia Yusuf-Garaad Omar has arrived in New Delhi for his first official visit.

India and Somalia on Tuesday signed an agreement for the transfer of sentenced persons in each other's country. Somali Foreign Minister held a meeting with Sushma Swaraj.

"An important step in deepening humanitarian cooperation, India and Somalia sign the bilateral agreement for the transfer of sentenced persons," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

The issue of piracy off the coast of Somalia has increased from the first part of this year. Earlier this year, India had thanked Somalia for rescuing 10 of its nationals held by pirates.The Indians were crew members on a commercial vessel -- Al Kausar -- that was hijacked by pirates off the Indian Ocean coast near Yemen. Hence the issue of piracy and maritime security were discussed between the two sides during the meetings.

Other aspects of India- Somalia bilateral relations were also discussed. The discussions on regional issues pertaining to developments in Gulf region and India’s neighborhood were held.
