To engage the young generation in the organization, the organizers have announced an innovative method of selection. Schoolchildren across the country can cast their vote in favor of favorite mascot. The design which will attract the children most will be chosen for final games.

Ryohei Miyata, the panel's head emphasized the role of children in the process. According to him, rather than adults children have a better critical eye to select mascots. The students want a different but likable mascot.

"Japanese mascots are loved by many people around the world. You and your classmates will select the best mascots for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We are going to ask all elementary school children in Japan to play this important role. We hope many people will enter this competition starting today," Miyata said while he was encouraging the children.
