Astana, August 10: India’s Trap shooter and Olympian Kynan Chenai along with his partner Shreyasi Singh bagged bronze medal in mixed team trap event in Asian Shotgun Shooting Championship being held in Astana, Kazakhstan. This is Kynan Chenai’s second international medal at the senior level.
The Indian pair Kynan and Shreyasi defeated Lebanan shooters by 40-38. It is India's 4th medal in the Championship. However, Kuwait's Abdulrahman Al Faihan and Sarah Al Hawal clinched the gold medal in the event after beating the Korean pair of Oh Taekeun and Kang Geeeun 36-35.
The Indian duo had earlier in the day topped the 16-team qualification round with a combined score of 91. Kynan shot 46 to Shreyasi's 45 to lead six pairs into the semi-final rounds.In the first semi-final, Chenai and Shreyasi ended on equal footing with the Kuwait team, both scoring 38 out of a possible 50 hits to force a shoot-off for a place in the gold medal match. The Kuwaitis won the shoot-off easily.
Earlier in the tournament, Kynan Chenai had also won bronze in men's trap event on Tuesday. Kynan first shot 116 out of 125 to qualify for the six-man final round in third position and then held on to it till the end of the finals, shooting a score of 30 to finish behind gold medalist Abdulrahman Al Faihan of Kuwait who shot 39 for a new Asian finals record and Talal al Rashidi also of Kuwait, who won silver after shooting 38.
Importantly, competitions for the 7th Asian Shooting Championships Shotgun will conclude on Sunday this week. Interestingly, mixed team events in the shooting including trap shooting are set to make a first appearance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as medal events and India will take a lot of encouragement from the results.
