Venkaiah Naidu to take oath as the 13th Vice-President on Friday

New Delhi, Aug 10: The stage is set for Vice-President elect M Venkaiah Naidu as he will take the oath of the Vice President of India, the second constitutional post after President of India. The former Union minister will also take the charge of Rajya Sabha Chairman where he will attend the last seating of current Monsoon session in his new role.

The 68-year-old former BJP President leader from Andhra Pradesh will replace the outgoing Vice-President Hamid Ansari. Naidu will be the 13th person to hold the second highest Constitutional post. After Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (2002-2007) Naidu will be the second BJP leader to become vice-president.

Before his elevation to the post of Vice-President, he has served as the minister for information and broadcasting and housing and urban affairs in the Modi government along with the Parliamentary Affairs portfolio. He was Union minister for rural development between September 30, 2000, and June 30, 2002, in Vajpayee government.

A prominent Telugu face of BJP, Naidu has served as national president from 2002 to 2004. Born on July 1, 1949, in Chavatapalem under Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, Naidu got married to M Usha on April 14, 1970. He has a son and a daughter. Venkaiah Naidu has done BA, BL and was educated at VR High School, Nellore; VR College, Nellore; and Law College, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.

He was elected as an MLA to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly twice from Udayagiri constituency in Nellore district in 1978 and 1983.later he was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka in 1998 and re-elected twice in 2004 and 2010 from the same state.
