Ranchi, August 10: Tribals of the East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan district celebrated the ‘Vishwa Adivasi Diwas’ the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is observed on August 9 each year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population.
“Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in November 2000 to safeguard the interest of tribals. The situation of the 108 backward caste are reeling under penury. It is surprising that the government has not taken adequate steps to protect them and never implemented the CNT Act properly. Even after the Jharkhand High Court passed an order asking the state to strictly implement the Act, the government does not appear to be serious. This has forced us to launch agitations to create pressure on the government,” said a leader.
He alleged that parties are not concerned about the welfare of the masses, especially the poor, and that is why they have ignored the court order.
The demand for scrapping the CNT Act shows the leaders of Jharkhand are not sincere towards the cause of the two major communities’ adivasis and moolvasis. Moreover, his actions suggest he is more concerned about non-adivasis and moolvasis.
“We took out a rally in the city to garner people support strict implementation of the policy. It prohibits sale or transfer of land owned by people from reserved category to general category,” noted another activist.
