Parliament's Monsoon Session ends; Lok Sabha passes 24 bills, Rajya Sabha 14

New Delhi, August 11: The parliament's 19-days Monsoon session concluded on Friday. During the Session, 17 Bills were introduced in Parliament. The Lok Sabha passed 14 Bills and while the Rajya Sabha passed 9 Bills during the session. There were 13 bills that the government managed to get passed in both the Houses.


The productivity of Lok Sabha was 77.94% and that of Rajya Sabha was 79.95%. Among the Bills passed by the House were National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public Private Partnership) Bill, Right of children to free and compulsort education Bill etc.

The Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill was referred to a Select Committee while the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill were referred to a joint committee.

The Monsoon Session also witnessed the elections to the posts of the President and the Vice President of the country.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said that the Monsoon Session of the Lower House had had 19 sittings which lasted 71 hours. She said during the period, 17 bills were introduced and 14 bills were passed, including the Banking (Amendment) Bill, and the suspension of six Congress members for “highly unbecoming” behaviour.

Mahajan said nearly 30 hours were wasted due to disruption. She also added that the House sat for over 10 hours extra, to discuss matters of public importance.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ananthkumar mentioned about the special discussion held in both Houses to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the ‘Quit India Movement’ and it is for the first time that the pledge of ‘Sankalp se Siddhi’ for building a New India by 2022 was taken with wide consensus among all parties.

Talking about the extension of Goods and Services Tax (GST) to the State of Jammu & Kashmir, Kumar said that this is a historic achievement as passing of the related bills will lead to the Economic Integration of the State with rest of the country.

In the Lok Sabha, 2 Short Duration Discussions were held on the Agrarian Situation in the Country and the situation arising out of Reported Incidents of Atrocities and Lynching in mob violence in the Country.

Also in the Rajya Sabha, three Short Duration Discussions were held on the situation arising out of the reported increase in the incidents of lynching and atrocities on minorities and dalits across the country, farmers’ distress leading to rise in the incidents of their suicide in the country and India’s foreign policy and engagement with strategic partners.
