India, Russia to hold tri-military drill ‘Indra’ from October 19

New Delhi, August 14: In a first, India and Russia have decided to hold mega war games in October involving armies, navies and the air forces of the two nations. The exercise, scheduled from October 19 to 29, will focus on achieving coordination between forces of both the nations.

The Indian army officials said “It is India's first tri-services exercise with a foreign country and of such large scale participation by the Navy, the Army and the Air Force. A total of 350 Indian Army personnel will participate at the mega exercise and the contingent will be led by a major general rank official.”

The sources said the exercise will take place in three locations in Russia including in mountainous Vladivostok region.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia in June, both countries had decided to upgrade and intensify defence cooperation through joint manufacture, co-production and co-development of key military hardware and equipment.

The armies and navies of India and Russia have been regularly holding the Indra joint exercises. The first Russian-Indian naval exercises were held in May 2003. The name Indra was coined in 2005. The Indra exercises were held in 2007, 2014 and 2015.
