Washington, August 16: Pakistan’s human rights violation and apathy towards minorities, Balochistan and others is well known by other countries. But the United States again exposed Pakistan over the attacks on minorities like Sikhs, Christians and Hindus.
Notably, the United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday released a report named ‘2016 International Religious Freedom Report’ which stated that religious freedom is under attack in Pakistan where minorities like Sikhs, Christians and Hindus remained concerned over government's "inadequate" action to address forced conversions to Islam.
The report released by Rex Tillerson noted that the members of religious minority communities said that there continued to be inconsistent application of laws safeguarding minority rights and enforcement of protections of religious minorities at both the federal and provincial levels by the Federal Ministry of Law, Justice, and Human Rights and its provincial counterparts.
The report said that according to Hindu and Sikh leaders, women from their communities face difficulties in obtaining inheritances, accessing health services, voting, obtaining a passport and buying or selling the property because of the legal uncertainty surrounding the process of registering marriages for their communities. The report also said that the government marginalizes Ahmadiyya Muslims.
Tillerson also said in his speech that religious freedom is under attack in Pakistan, where more than two dozen are on death row or serving a life imprisonment for blasphemy. "It is my hope that the new Prime Minister (Shahid Khaqan Abbasi) and his government will promote interfaith harmony and protect the rights of religious minorities," Tillerson said after releasing the report.
