New Delhi, August 17: Women of 21st Century are much bolder, confident and progressive than men. With the advancement of new technology and digital age, women are excelling in every field. But with all the success arrives work pressure which often leads to night shifts which can cause great harm to women. According to a study by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, women who live in areas of higher levels of outdoor light at night may be at higher risk of risking a breast cancer than women who live in lower levels of outdoor light.
“In our modern industrialised society, artificial lighting is nearly ubiquitous. Our results suggest that this widespread exposure to outdoor lights during nighttime hours could represent a novel risk factor for breast cancer,” said lead author Peter James from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, Boston, US.
The suggested link between breast cancer and shift work has been put down to melatonin, but sleep disturbances, upset body rhythms, vitamin D or lifestyle differences may also play their part.
Women exposed to the highest levels of outdoor light at night, those in the top fifth, had an estimated 14% increased risk of breast cancer during the study period, as compared with women in the bottom fifth of exposure, the researchers found. As levels of outdoor light at night increased, so did breast cancer rates.
And the link grew stronger in case of premenopausal women who smoked regularly in their past. So, it’s highly recommended that women should complete their sleep cycle no matter what and keep a check on their harmful habits. Breast cancer has become common amongst women. Everyone must take precautionary steps before the harm is done.
