Irony! South Africa, the nation with biggest HIV treatment program has highest HIV prevalence rate

Cape Town, August 2: The African nation which is considered as one of the most developed nations in the continent, unfortunately, has the highest HIV prevalence in the world. The bigger irony is South Africa has biggest HIV treatment program in the world.As per Statistics South Africa report, approximately 12.6% South African population suffers from HIV.

Statistics South Africa has published released the Mid-year population. The total number of people living with HIV is estimated at approximately 7.06 million in 2017. The age group 15-49 has a rate of 18.0% HIV patients.

According to WHO 2016 report, total 36.7 million people were under HIV infection. Among them, 1.0 million people died suffering from AIDS. Among these 36.7 million sufferers, 25.6 million were from Africa.

 Ironically, on the other hand, South Africa has the world’s biggest HIV treatment program covering over 3.4 million people. This program has contributed has contributed to a decline in deaths due to communicable diseases such as HIV and TB.

SA government also launched a launched the 90-90-90 plan. Under the plan, 90 per cent of all people living with HIV will know their HIV status by 2020. The same year, 90 per cent of all people with diagnosed HIV infection will receive sustained antiretroviral therapy. The government also intends to ensure that 90 per cent of all HIV positive people receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression.
