Hamburg, August 26: India’s emerging boxer and Asian bronze-medallist Amit Phangal in the 49 kg category while Gaurav Bidhuri in 56 Kg category on Friday advanced to the pre-quarterfinals at the World Championships which is being held in Hamburg, Germany.
Amit Phangal in his opening round bout registered a commanding victory over Italy's Federico Serra in a split verdict to make it to the Round-of-16. Amit was sluggish in the opening round, allowing his rival easy shots. However, he managed to get his act together in the second and third round to seal the issue in his favour, albeit on a split decision.
It was a hard fought victory for Amit and he will compete against seventh seed Carlos Quipo of Ecuador. Meanwhile, Gaurav defeated Sam Goodman, an 18-year-old world youth bronze- medallist and Oceania champion in the 56 Kg category. He will take on sixth-seeded Mauritian Jean-Jordy Vadamootoo in the next round.
India’s campaign at the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany got off to a good start with a win in the tournament. Eight Indians are in the fray in the competition, which has close to 250 pugilists vying for top honours. On the other side, Shiva Thapa and Vikas Krishan were handed opening-round byes and entered in the pre-quarterfinals of the tournament.
